Renowned American author Anne Rice was born on the 4th October 1941. Wife of famous poet Stan Rice, Anne came into prominence after the widespread popularity of her Vampire series novels. Anne Rice is among the select class of authors to have crossed the 100 million copies in sales.
Anne Rice was named as Howard Allen O'Brien by her parents however she called herself ‘Anne’ on the first day of school a name which was favourably associated with her throughout her life. Anne Rice spent her early years in New Orleans, Louisiana the relics of New Orleans can be seen through her writings. After the death of Anne’s mother due to alcohol abuse her father moved to North Texas in 1958, Anne was seventeen at that time.
Anne attended Richardson High School where she met Stan Rice her would be husband. Initially Anne enrolled in Texas Woman’s University located at Delton but soon changed the course to California with Stan Rice. After spending some time in California the couple settled in San Francisco where Anne Rice graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science.
Anne and Stan were blessed with a daughter named Michele, born on September 21st, 1966 but the couple lost their child on August 5th, 1972 due to persistent leukaemia. Their next child was a son born on 11th March 1978, the now famous novelist Christopher Rice.
Anne Rice wrote her first book in 1973 titled Interview with the Vampire published in 1976. The book turned out to be the first of the famous Vampire Chronicle series, Interview with the Vampire was followed by The Vampire Lestat and the Queen of the Damned published in 1985 and 1988 respectively. Anne Rice also posses explicit adult fiction writing skills, the art she excised under the pen names of Anne Rampling and A.N Roquelaure.
After spending most of her adult life away from religion, Anne Rice decided to return to her Roman Catholic faith in the year 1998. She had renounced the practice of her religion at the age of fifteen. In 2004 Anne Rice announced she would write only for Lord and no one else even if it makes her bankrupt. The first novel in this genre came in the form of Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. In 2008, she published her autobiography Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession, in her autobiography Anne explains her return to faith.
In 1998 Anne Rice was discovered with Insulin Dependant Diabetes mellitus after she went into a coma due to Diabetic keto-acidosis. Anne’s health worsened after the death of Stan Rice in the year 2002. Anne’s body weight increased to 115 kgs in the years following Stan's death. On January 30th 2004 Anne revealed her plan to leave New Orleans in search of peace away from the public eye.
In 2005 Anne moved to California and later shifted to Rancho Mirage to take advantage of its warm climate and simple life. Based on Anne’s work, film adaptations of her books Interview with the Vampire and The Queen of the Damned have been made, both movies received global acclaim.
